Description:
On Hold. Pending Sale!  This is a nice example of a standard Winchester 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine in 44 WCF aka 44-40; the Gun That Won The West!  These were very popular with Cowboys, Law Enforcement (See late 1880's vintage Photo of Texas Rangers), outlaws, Native Americans, hunters, etc.  They were shipped all over the world as well.  This one comes with its original 3 piece carbine cleaning rods, the Winchester Model 1882 Reloading Tool with its original decapping pin (hard to find) intact, original Winchester 40 Grain Brass Powder Measure (very hard to find), Winchester 44 Cal Bullet Mold, and early Union Metallic Cartridge Company Green Picture Box for 44-40 (empty).  The serial number is in the 247,000 range and was made in 1887. The carbine configuration of the Model 1873 saw the hardest use as they were regarded as utility rifles and designed to be carried on horseback in a leather scabbard.  Many spent their working lives out in the elements and were typically not well taken care of.  Most have zero original finish left on them and show a lot of abuse, particularly the wood and many have broken or replaced buttstocks due to being dropped or a horse rolling over on top of them while in the scabbard.  That said, this one is much better than average and shows very little usage compared to most.  The receiver still shows about 75% original blue on the left side and 55-60% on the right side with a few spots that have been lightly cleaned.  Loading port on right side still has a nice ring of fire blue remaining.  Hammer still shows some light case colors while the colors on the lever have mostly silvered out with a little bit of shadow that's mixing with a light patina.  Dust cover still has most of its original blue and bolt and firing pin still show a fair bit of original blue as well.  The barrel and magazine tube have about 10% original blue in protected areas...around the sight, along the wood line, with the balanced turned to grey...some of this likely being lightly cleaned long ago.  Original 2-9 hundred yard graduated rear sight is intact with the correct "1873" marking at the top of the ladder.  Barrel has the correct 2 line address at the 12 o'clock position and "44 W.C.F." stamped behind the rear sight just forward of the receiver.  Top tang is clearly marked "MODEL 1873" and bracketed by 2 Fleur De Lis.  Brass loading block is clearly marked "44 CAL" in script which is correct for an 1887 vintage Model 1873.  Hammer has the standard checkering with the rectangular border...also correct for 1887 production.  The walnut stocks are Excellent with no cracks or damage.  The mechanics are excellent and the bore is mirror bright...looks to be MINT.  One of the nicest bores I've ever seen on a carbine.  The accessories that come with this gun are all in fantastic condition given their age.  Not many carbines have their original rods and you almost never see a complete set of Winchester Loading Tools from the 1800's with the decapping pin and powder measure almost always lost.  Antique, Pre-1898.  No FFL required in most states.  No sales to NYC, Chicago, or DC.  No International sales.  Buyer must be 18 years of age and a legal citizen of the United States.  $60.00 shipping via USPS Priority Mail in the Lower 48. On Hold, Sale Pending!
