Description:
FINE 1892 OCTAGON LEVER RIFLE IN .32 CENTER FIRE, #364XXX, MADE 1907. To be correct, this one is stamped "Model '92" on the upper tang which is correct for most models beginning in about 1905.(Models 1893 & 1894 became Model '93 & Model '94 etc.). Interestingly, the 1892 series was offered in .22 Rim Fire and .32 caliber. The .32s were sold with two firing pins- one for rim fire ammo and one for center fire. It was easy to swap them out. This one has the center fire firing pin. Either would take the .32 Short or Long in either rim fire or  center fire form. Marlin advertised the .32 in this way: This ammunition is cheap, and as compared with repeaters using the .32-20 or  .32WCF cartridges, will save the entire cost of the rifle on the first two thousand cartridges. The ammunition is what costs in the long run. Get the best rifle to shoot cheap cartridges. We particularly recommend this repeater to the farmer as an all-around rifle, combining the many good points of the old muzzle-loading squirrel rifle with the convenience, cheapness, rapid fire, etc., of the most improved system of repeaters. The short cartridges are just the thing for small game, and the long ones will kill hogs or beef very handily..."  Ya gotta love old fashioned advertising- they were pretty blunt back then! As this was typically a small game and utility rifle, they are usually found in beat up and often abused condition. This is a nice one. The stock and forend show tight wood to metal fit with only light handling marks and still quite a bit of finish on the butt stock. The 24" octagon barrel and magazine show fine deep blue with a tinge of plum from age. Excellent markings on the barrel and upper tang. The receiver blue is ageing to a natural plum/brown. Screws are excellent and the buckhorn rear sight and Rocky Mountain blade front sight are original. Bore is fine with good rifling all the way through and only some scattered minor spots of roughness. Action is tight with strong springs and good safety notch. Much better than usually encountered.
