Description:
Civil War Sharps Slant Breech Carbine, Model 1853. Asthetically very pleasing, as you can see in the photos.
Good condition, original barrel bluing remains fading to a dark color. Breech, lock, lever, all metal parts smooth and clean with appealing even patina. No rust or pitting, minor oxidation marks, visible in photos. Barrel marking faint but legible, plate and tang markings very strong and clear. Wood shows even wear and use, with normal scratches and dings found on well-used weapons. There were initials etched in the wood long ago, hard to make out but looks like "WAF", beside what appears to be the remnants of a cartouche that has worn off with time and not legible. Extended arm of the hinge pin is broken off, as is often seen, still functions normally.
The barrel interior is oxidized and worn but good rifling is still easily visible. Brass butt plate and patch box are original to the model 1853 slant breech. The single brass barrel band appears to be a period field-replacement.
