Description:
Investment Grade Civil War Merrill Carbine SRC Cavalry, Gorgeous.

Merril "Old Model" Carbine, .54 caliber.  Part of the 12/24/1861 contract order at "30.00 each delivered to the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry in April 1862.  The 3rd Wisconsin was attached to the "Frontier Theatre", served throughout Missouri, Arkansas, and the then "Indian Territory", and was engaged in numerous skirmishes and battles against 'Quantrell's guerrillas".
IMPORTANT TO NOTE, On October 6, 1863, Quantrell's guerillas attacked the rear of the 3rd Cavalry at Baxter's Springs in Cherokee Nation.  They killed 33, wounded another 14, including the Quartermaster and his staff, and the regimental band, taking no quarter and making off with a large cache of carbines.  This particular gun could very well have been captured and later used by Quantrell's guerillas.

Good colors on lock, hammer and tang, fair colors on breech lever.  80%+ original chocolate-brown finish on barrel.  All metal surfaces smooth and free of rust and pitting, extremely minor oxidation on breech lever and barrel, barrel has two very tiny scratches through the finish on the right, barely visible.  Fairly sharp manufacturer stamp on lock-plate, very strong matching serial numbers stamped on both lock and tang, good crisp stamp on breech lever, with inspector mark stamp "51" in two different places on the underside of the breech lever.  Brass patchbox, buttplate, and barrel band are correct.  Stock is very good, with only minor wear, and there are some faintly noticeable scratches around the wrist of the stock, perhaps it was mounted on a low quality gunrack with a sharp edge at one point.  Bore rifling is very strong throughout, with even oxidation.
Overall Very Good+

This is an important piece of American HIstory involved in Civil War, Quantrell, and Indian War frontier conflicts.
