Description:
Absolutely spectacular James Purdey Island Lock top lever 12 gauge hammer gun. Circa 1884 this magnificent Purdey has 29” Sir Joseph Whitworth fluid pressed steel barrels that are chambered and proofed for 2 ¾” shells. A narrow concave game rib sits on top of the barrels and is engraved “J. Purdey & Sons, Audley House, south Audley Street, London” also engraved on the rib is the Whitworth barrel inscription. The chokes are .006 (skeet) and .015 (modified). Both bores are .736” and the wall thicknesses are .024” each and subsequently Birmingham nitro proofed for 2 ¾” shells in 2002. Extractors.
The beautiful cased hardened round body action has very finely filed fences, side clips and Purdey hidden third fastener. The 80% coverage of engraving in small shaded scroll with bouquets is indicative of Purdey’s early “house” style engraving. Island back action rebounding locks have serpentine hammers with dolphin heads. Double triggers.
The stock is an elegant piece of art cut from a marbled and slightly stump figured piece of Circassian Walnut. It is straight gripped with an LOP of 14 5/8” over the full leather recoil pad; 1 13/16 DAC and 2 1/8” DAH with a slight amount of cast favoring a right hand shooter. Matching splinter forearm with Anson release. Both the stock and forearm are beautifully checkered at 24 LPI. There is a vacant silver inset on the top of the stock near the heel and another on the bottom just behind the trigger guard.
The gun is cased in an exquisite Ian Tomlin English oak and leather luggage case with a canvas/leather trimmed outer cover. Inside is a full complement of James Purdey turn screws, tools and accessories. Replacement cost of the case and accessories is in excess of £7,000!!
This exceptional gun is in near new condition since a meticulous restoration. In 2004 the gun won the Vintager’s award at the 8thGold Medal Concours d’Elegance of Fine Guns. This provenance as well as the framed Proof certificate come with the gun. Truly the best of the best! I cannot say for certain but the restoration work appears to have been done by Westley Richards.
Weight is 6 lbs. 2 oz. and the gun balances nicely between the hands and has a quick feel.
