Made by Emerson Gaylord of Chicopee, Massachusetts. The inner cover has the E. Gaylord mark. Beneath the stitching for the tab on the outside cover is the stamp of T.I. Shepard, inspector. The holes in the wood block are 0.57" diameter. The black enameled sling buckles are still present on the bottom. The leather is dry but still mostly pliable. The cover of the thin calfskin implement pouch is stiff and the front of the pouch is falling apart. The leather belt loops are intact but cracking. The piece would benefit from some leather preservative. Still an attractive piece, with a good shape thanks to the wood cartridge block. One of a handful of authentic Civil War and Indian War era cartridge boxes we have for sale, including two percussion pistol boxes, an 1876 type McKeever box, and an 1864 type rifle cartridge box.
