Description:
Description:
This is an excellent example of a post war, second pattern FN Model 49 semi-automatic sniper rifle as produced by FN in Herstal, Belgium for the Egyptian military, complete with its original, Echo scope mount and Czech manufactured MEOPTA sniper scope. These rifles are discussed on pages 223-228 in the book: “The FN-49/The Last Elegant Old-World Military Rifle” by Johnson. Although there were approximately 1,000 special-ordered scope mounts, very few sniper rifles were ever assembled. Documented guns all fall into the serial number range of 33,600 to 34,500, this example being just two numbers away from the rifle pictured in Johnson’s book (34,100). One of the rarest snipers extent, Johnson mentions, ” While no firm production quantity can be derived from this data, it is obvious that the Egyptian sniper rifles are very scarce, much more so than the Luxembourg FN-49 sniper rifles of which only 203 were made.” This rifle has the late contract Egyptian Crest on top of the receiver with FN legend and serial number on the right side. Matching Arabic serial numbers are on the right side of the receiver, right side of the stock, and top of the scope. The last few digits on the action cover are different, still in Arabic, suggesting a field replacement. On the left side of the receiver is a milled dovetail slot for the sniper scope base which is fitted with the correct base marked “O.I.P.–1955/BELGIQUE”. The mount was produced in the U.S. by the Herkner Company and is marked “ECHO/E.C. HERKNER Co./Boise Idaho”. The top of the scope is marked “MEOPTA 2.5X6.P/0367” with a rubber eyepiece. The original walnut stock is correctly fitted with the second pattern wooden cheekpiece held on by three screws. The buttstock is fitted with a brass buttplate, trapdoored for cleaning components. Complete with flash hider and ten shot box magazine.
