EXCELLENT AND VERY RARE 1ST YEAR PRODUCTION MODEL 53 IN .44-40 CALIBER, #5XX, MADE 1924. This "modernized" version of the famed Model 1892 only had a five year production run before the Stock Market Crash of 1929. After that, the Great Depression of the 1930s about wiped out production of this model. Here are some interesting figures: in 1924 1,487 Model 53s were made. In 1931 621 were made, and between the years of 1933-1941 a total of only 136 Model 53s were produced! The standard caliber was .25-20 with the .32-20 being made in lesser numbers and the .44-40 being made in far fewer M-53s. They are seldom encountered today. This solid frame example shows about all the original deep blue on the barrel. The receiver shows deep blue on the sides with some thinning blue on the bolt and silvering on the bottom portion ahead of the lever. The lower tang beneath the lever shows excellent deep blue and the upper tang shows fine lightly thinning blue. When the light hits the receiver just right, one can detect very light cleaning abrasions to some of the surface blue which is minor and could probably be blended easily- either way, it is minor. Even the forend cap retains fine blue. The forend and butt stock are excellent with tight wood to metal fit and retain most of the original finish. Original buckhorn and small blade/bead front sight. Screws are excellent. Original serrated steel butt plate, tight action, minty bright bore. Hard to find in any condition!
