Description:
Serial #2966, .52 Caliber, 20" part octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a stunning example that retains 98-99% of the original blue on the barrel, with only hints of silvering at the muzzle, and on the edges of the breech facets. The frame and lever retain a commensurate amount of the original, bright color case-hardening, that has only slightly faded along the forward portion on the right side, and developed a small amount of mild freckling on the rear portion of the lockplate. The breechblock has brilliant original fire blue remaining, as does the top tang, which fades to plum-brown along the wrist. The walnut stock is also in excellent condition with few handling marks marring the original oil finish, and there is a crisp cartouche on the left side. The Gwynn & Campbell “Union" carbine was a popular weapon during the Civil War, and about 4,000 of these Type II guns were manufactured. This example does not appear to have ever been issued, and retains an extremely high amount of the original finish, it would make splendid addition to any collection. Antique
