Description:
(Layaway?)....45 cal, 3 1/2" barrel with an oxidized bore showing evident rifling throughout. The barrel and lockplate have mostly toned to a silvery gunmetal patina showing some spots of pinprick pitting scattered about. The hammer appears to be a functional replacement as is the nipple. The lockplate and breech are embellished with nice foliate scrollwork along with dual silver bands at the breech and the top barrel flat is clearly marked "R. P. BRUFF / N.Y." and "CAST STEEL". The pistol is fitted with a number of German silver appointments including wedge and screw escutcheons, simple decorative sideplate, flash plate, teardrop buttcap, small wedge at the tip, shield-shaped monogram plate and triggerguard with lightly embellished finial. The checkered walnut stock remains in about very good condition having darkened from the years and showing a small repaired crack at the lock screw, a couple smaller thin drying cracks, worn checkering and handling marks. Metal-to-wood fit is still quite nice and the lock functions crisply. A fine example of these rather scarce American Derringers. [Dr. Louis C.
