Description:
Excellent condition Poultney & Trimble Smith carbine serial number 6675, matching on all serialized components. Springfield Research Survey shows a bunch with slightly earlier serial numbers being issue to the 11th Illinois Cavalry. 50 caliber breechloading percussion carbine with 21 5/8" barrel having the breech-to-barrel band portion octagon-shaped and the remainder round. Blued and case hardened finish with walnut stocks. Multiple sub-inspector initials appear as well as 2 sharp final inspector's cartouches at the proper location on the left wrist of the butt stock. Correct open sights and correct sling loop and bar remain intact. See Flayderman's 9B-085 for more information regarding the inventor and manufacturer.
CONDITION: Bright excellent bore, near mint. The barrel of this carbine retains about 95% original blue showing some very mild toning to gray-brown, a few sparsely scattered specks of old oxidation staining and some light handling marks. Th receiver retains perhaps 92% original vibrant case-hardened colors with areas muting to smooth silvery gray patina. The triggerguard and buttstock collar retain a similar amount of bright blue showing a little brown freckling and some handling marks along the bow of the guard while the top latch retains about 94% brilliant bright blue showing some scattered light oxidation staining. The left barrel flat shows a strong sub-inspector stamp and the markings on the left side of the action remain completely intact and strong. The smooth walnut buttstock and forend remain in excellent condition with some scattered light dings and handling marks but never cleaned, sanded or refinished and have no splits, no cracks and no extra holes. Metal-to-wood fit remains very nice. The action is tight and the lock-up is solid with no play or wobble. Guaranteed 100% original and grades NRA Antique Excellent and a fine piece to add to or start with a Civil War firearms collection.
