Description: Mass Arms Co. of Chicopee Falls, MA manufactured 2 models of the Maynard cavalry carbine. This is the 2nd model without the tape primer mechanism and tang sight. Listed in the company literature as the "Model 1863" and issued to Union cavalry regiments such as the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. Blued and case hardened finish with walnut butt stock. These were not manufactured with a fore stock. Serial number 16824. Various sub-inspector initials present on multiple parts and 2 clear final inspector cartouches appear at the correct location of the left wrist. 20" barrel, mostly round, with small octagonal portion at breech. 50 caliber percussion breechloading single shot style. See Flayderman's 9B-074 for more information regarding the manufacturer and inventor. CONDITION: Bright excellent bore, near mint. The barrel of this fine carbine retains about 97% original blue with most of the loss due to a number of thin minor scratches on the right side ahead of the octagonal portion and a few scattered small specks of old oxidation. The action is muting to a nice smooth silvery gray case-hardened patina showing a little minor speckling and some light stains with generous smoky colors throughout remaining quite vibrant along the left side and protected areas. The buttplate retains generous flaking bright blue and the action small parts retain about 98% original blue, some of the screw heads thinning to gray and showing some very mild slot wear. All markings remain completely intact and crisp; interestingly the left side frame was originally stamped with the maker markings, the Maynard patent information subsequently stamped over them, thus being a "factory error" and quite possible adding some rarity and value as the maker markings are correctly stamped on the right side of the frame in their correct location. The smooth walnut buttstock remains in very fine condition retaining most of its original oil finish and showing some sparsely scattered light dings and handling marks. The stock fit is excellent and the left side wrist shows two crisp inspector cartouches. The original sights and saddle ring are intact, the barrel locks up tightly with no wobble or play, and the action functions well mechanically.
