Description:

Will consider offers: A very good 137 year old Colt Model 1978 Hammer Double Barrel Shotgun. It's been in our family as a safe Queen for generations. Great granddad, Granddad, My Dad and myself. Shipped as a single item from Colt to Hartley and Graham New York December 14, 1883. The Colt Model 1878 Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun is considered to be the finest American double-barrel shotgun. Manufactured from 1878-1889, the Model 1878 Shotgun was the highest priced item in the Colt line and was available in almost any grade as a special order item. The accompanying Colt factory letter states that the shotgun was shipped to Hartley & Graham, in New York New York on December 12, 1883. The letter describes the shotgun as 12 Gauge with 29-inch barrels, blue finish and wood stocks. "Engraving" is listed as "$1.75." Single bead sight on the solid concave rib marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." at the breech end. The receiver, side plates, hammers, trigger guard and forearm catch are casehardened and decorated with delicate scrollwork and double line borders. "Colt's Pt. F. A. Mfg. Co." is engraved in fancy script on the sides of the lock plates. The serial number, "6120" is engraved on the lower tang. Round knob pistol grip stock with black checkered hard rubber buttplate with the Rampant Colt trademark embossed. No cracks in the buttplate. Condition Very fine. However there is a small ding on the left barrel see picture 26. Some small scratches underneath by the trigger guard. The barrels show 70% of the Damascus pattern with the balance having a smooth plum brown patina. The trigger guard has a smooth brown patina. The casehardened parts retain 50% of the original case colors, brightest on the side plates with a smooth light brown patina on the balance. The marking and engraving are crisp. The wood is very good showing some scattered moderate handling wear with scattered minor nicks and scratches. The checkering on the forearm has hardly any handling wear. This is a very fine example of one of the finest Colt products and one of the best 19th Century American double-barrel hammer shotguns. The included factory letter (copy) confirms the serial number "6120", gauge, barrel length, finish, stock, original weight, and December 12,1883 date of shipment as a single item to Hartley & Graham. The letter further notes that the shotgun was listed as a Grade 6 at the time of shipment with no explanation as to what type of ornamentation this would involve. Blue, twist pattern, dovetail lump Damascus barrels with single brass bead sight, "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A." address on the smooth concave rib, chambers measured at 2 3/4 inches with single extractor. I believe the chokes are improved modified/improved modified chokes. The casehardened receiver and locks have 75% coverage in sharp engraving. "COLT" maker's marks on the locks, dual triggers, knurled hammer spurs, and knurled break lever. The barrels have 40% of the strong, visible Damascus pattern, areas of darker spotting, patches of oxidation and light pitting, and some small dings and deeper scratches. The Left barrel has a small dig (see picture). The receiver and locks have 40% original case colors (more vibrant in the protected areas), Brown patina on the balance, some light spotting, and a mottled brown/gray patina on the guard. The wood is also fine with mostly crisp, well defined checkering, small dings and bruises throughout, Mechanically excellent everything works.
