ALMOST NEVER SEEN 1895 .38-72 WITH SPECIAL ORDER HALF-OCTAGON BARREL AND SHOTGUN BUTT, #52XXX, MADE 1906. According to the detailed new book, Winchester Model 1895 by Rob Kassab and Brad Dunbar, only 92 rifles were produced with half octagon barrels. The octagon and half-octagon barrels were offered only in the scarce black powder calibers .38-72 and .40-72 until March 1908. I called the Cody Museum on this one and was surprised when the call-in sheet listed this one with an octagon barrel. It also confirmed the caliber, shotgun butt, flat-top sporting rear and Lyman front sights (which it has) and shows it was received in the warehouse May 5, 1906 and shipped May 7, 1906. Both the receiver and barrel have the correct oval Winchester proof mark which was begun in July 17, 1905. There was no mention of this rifle being returned/repaired. If the barrel was changed, someone would have had to find a half-octagon 1895 barrel in .38-72 made between July 17, 1905 (when proofing began) and March of 1908. There is no "oval P" mail order barrel proof mark on the barrel. Not much time for all this to occur. My take on this is that either it is a mistake in the records (fairly common) or the rifle was returned to Winchester and a half-octagon barrel was installed and it was not logged in to the records. It is also possible a half oct. barrel from another rifle was swapped for the "original" octagon one on this rifle, but that seems really unlikely seeing as how few rifles were turned out with a half-oct barrel. Either way, this is an extremely rare 1895. The butt stock with smooth steel butt plate is excellent with tight wood to metal fit. The forend shows normal handling and retains the original ebony wedge inlay in the schnable tip. The 26" barrel shows good but thinning blue with most of the wear ahead of the octagon portion. and some light marks in the metal toward the receiver. The receiver is mostly gray with good markings. The bore shows wear and is fairly heavily frosted with good but worn rifling throughout. I've only seen a couple of half octagon 1895s in the last few decades!
