Description:
Very Fine Condition Type III Model 1816 Harpers Ferry .69 Caliber 3-band Smoothbore Musket:

The US Model 1816 musket, the last flintlock martial arm to be produced for the U.S. Army, had a colorful history spanning over 50 years and two major armed conflicts. It had the highest production of any U.S. issued flintlock musket, attesting to its craftsmanship and reliability.  It was produced at both the Springfield and Harpers Ferry Armories in approximately equal amounts.  Between 1816 and 1844 the musket design was enhanced from a “Type I” to a “Type II” and finally to a “Type II”.  This particular Type III example started life as a flintlock, with its lock plate showing its manufacture at the Harpers Ferry Armory in 1838. Sometime in the mid or late 1850’s it was “modernized” by installing a new breech with an integrated bolster and cleanout screw, then retooling the lock mechanism to a percussion lock and hammer.

The musket is in overall very fine condition and is all original and complete, including ramrod. All metal is in original uncleaned armory bright without pitting or other damage. The walnut stock is solid and shows good condition original military finish with some minor handling dings and a shallow carved “H” on the left side. The bore is bright and good. The stamps on the metal are crisp, including: eagle, 1838 dating and armory stamps on the lock plate; “U.S.” on the butt plate; “s” on the barrel bands, and “6” assembly stamps on most components, including screws and band springs. Multiple maker stamps are also found on the lock inlet, reverse lock flat, and tang/wrist area of the wood.  The 1850’s percussion conversion would have naturally removed further 1838 stampings on the tang and breach portion for which a new lock set was substituted. Both the underside of the barrel and new breach are stamped with a conversion number of “87”, and there is an adjacent  similar struck stamp of “I”. This indicates the conversion was likely done by a member of the Innes family (Charles, Gregory or William), all of whom were armorers working on guns throughout the 1850’s in Harpers Ferry.
