The Colt Single Action Army, also known as the Peacemaker, is one of the most popular firearms of all time and has been so since its introduction in 1873. It was built to replace the many cartridge conversion revolvers that were prevalent in the post-Civil War period. Many people owned a Colt 1851 Navy or 1860 Army cap-and-ball revolver that had been converted to shoot one of the new rimfire cartridges that became immediately available after the civil war such as the .38 rimfire and.44 rimfire. When the SAA was introduced, it changed everything. It featured the addition of a top strap in the frame for increased strength, an 1851 Navy grip, the manual ejector rod found on the previous M1871-72 open top revolvers, and most importantly, the ability to shoot centerfire ammunition. The addition of a top strap allowed the SAA to remain in production after the introduction of smokeless powder in the 1880s. The SAA, available in variety of sub-models, was popular with lawmen, ranchers, bandits, and soldiers. The SAA chambered for over 30 different cartridges, for which the .45 was the most well-known, alongside the popular .44-40, .38-40, .32-20, and many others. The first generation of the SAA was produced between 1873 and 1940 when production stopped due to the need to produce M1911A1 pistols in greater numbers for use by the U.S. military. The Bisley sub-model was introduced in 1894 and produced until 1915. Up to 44,350 were made. Surprisingly, of the 16 or 17 available chamberings, ranging from the .32 Colt to the .455 Eley, the .32-20 Winchester was the most common chambering with 13,291 produced with the standard frame compared to 8005 for the .45 Colt on the same frame.
The pistol shown has a factory letter which gives a very interesting destination point. According to the letter, this Frontier was shipped on June 10th, 1910 to “Gro. Peters y Cia, Succs.” in Durango, Mexico. This was the year that the Mexican Civil War began which lasted from 1910 to 1920. The pistol’s condition suggests that it was very much used during that conflict, though it seems the original user took care to prevent the bore from becoming rusted or pitted. The frame and barrel have almost none of the original finish left, though the Factory Letter indicates it was originally blued. The barrel exhibits physical holster wear in that the sides of the crown are smoothed out on the edges resulting in a longer curve while the curves on the top and bottom are much sharper as they normally are on a brand new barrel. The wear indicates the pistol was removed and returned to its holster on a regular basis. The grips are very well worn with almost no checkering remaining, another sign of frequent handling. The top of the barrel and the butt of the grip exhibit many small dings. The front of the ejector rod housing has a noticeable ding in it though this does not affect the operation of the ejector rod. The frame, cylinder, and barrel possess small amounts of micro pitting but nothing serious. Mechanically the pistol is in great shape with four distinct clicks when the hammer is cocked. The cylinder rotates perfectly. The bore is in excellent shape for its age, with only a few spots of micro pitting here and there, and would be accurate. This Bisley is certainly a pistol with an interesting history too it. It would make a nice addition to any Colt collection.
