Description:
The Winchester Model of 1873 is considered by many to be the Rifle that Won the West alongside the Colt Peacemaker (the Pistol that Won the West). The 1873 was the first centerfire rifle that allowed its owner to carry one type of ammunition for both rifle and pistol. The 1873 was most famously chambered in the .44-40 Winchester cartridge, widely known for its stopping power. It has been said that more people, bad and good, were killed by this cartridge than any other in the Old West. The rifle shown here is a 3rd Model Rifle, meaning that the singular guide for the dust cover is machined into the receiver rather than being a separate part held down by a screw. The “Rifle” designation means it has the 24” octagonal barrel rather than the 20” round barrel of the carbine or the 30” round barrel of the musket version. With a full-length magazine tube, the 1873 has a capacity of 15 rounds plus one in the chamber. The buttstock storage space is empty but can be used to store cleaning equipment. A previous 1873 the author saw once contained a four-piece cleaning rod and patch holder. The stock has two markings on the right-hand side. It is possible these are ranch markings or a ranch brand. The bore exhibits pitting but the rifling is still defined. The top of the bolt has minor wear which is shown in the pictures. The dust cover is loose when in the forward position, moving left to right despite the tab at the tip of cover being designed to fit in a recess in the receiver just above the bolt. The spring underneath is likely just weak from age. When the rifle is held upside, the carrier moves inward a little without operation of the lever. This is also likely due to a weak spring (the carrier lever spring). The markings on the receiver are slightly worn from age and handling. Conversely, the markings on the barrel are clearly defined. The forearm is missing a small portion of wood on the front left side behind the forearm cap. This is understandable given the rifles age. The serial number dates this rifle to the year 1888, which makes this rifle 132 years old! Overall, this rifle is an interesting piece of American history.
