Description:
ORNATE, DOG’S HEAD, Carved & INLAID Spanish MIQUELET Percussion PISTOL

Stylish 1820s Pistol with GOLDEN Maker’s Mark!

Here we present an antique Spanish Patilla Miquelet Belt Pistol, made circa 1820 in Spain. The miquelet was an early and sturdy form of flintlock popular throughout Europe and the Ottoman Empire from the seventeenth into the early twentieth century. The “Miquelet” was developed in Spain and remained popular there for quite some time. It proved to be both the precursor and companion to what we now call the “true” flintlock.

This pistol features a dog’s head cast and engraved hammer, which was part of the conversion to percussion from flintlock. The lock mechanism is something you can see on the exterior of the lock plate, which is part of what makes this system unique. The barrel has a golden maker’s mark in the form of a lion within the box. Symmetrical, vining scrollwork inlaid with silver is ahead of that on the top of the barrel. The left side is equipped with a sturdy belt hook with a heart motif at the end. Brass trigger guard and ramrod hardware. Pewter pommel cap. Nice wood grain in the stock. There is a repair to the fore end that is visible in the photos.

The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and tight all around, which is somewhat rare in miquelets. The bore is in good shape. The repairs to the stock are stable and solid. Here is a truly one-of-a-kind percussion conversion pistol that would have been very handy as well as attractive!

Barrel is 5-7/8 inches.
