Description:
Serial #4555, .303 British, 30 1/4 inch barrel with a fine, bright bore that has mild freckling within the grooves. This is a very nice, LSA-made rifle that has retained 85-90% of the original blue that has silvered at the muzzle and projecting edges, as well as having thin brown freckling mixing with the blue throughout. The rifle is marked with “LEE-SPEED / PATENTS" on the receiver ring, and the matching numbered bolt is fitted with a safety. The rifle is equipped with a non-original, military marked nosecap, original ramrod, magazine cut-off, and complete set of volley sights. The english walnut buttstock, forend, and handguard have an attractive straight-grained appearance, with small handling marks and minor surface blemishes scattered about the reapplied varnish. The buttstock has a slightly different color, and the handguard has short, with-the-grain cracks on the front and rear. The rifle is accompanied by a Braendlin Armoury Co.-made, Pattern 1888 Mk. I, Type 2 bayonet that measures 16 3/4" overall, with a 12" straight, double-edged blade. The blade the original bright finish remaining, with some spots of dark brown freckling towards the tip, while the hilt fittings have developed a freckled gray-brown patina. The hilt has a single forward swept quillon with disk finial, and lightly worn walnut, two-rivet grips and steel pommel with functional latch stud and double Broad Arrow stamp. The bayonet comes with a heavily worn, but intact leather scabbard that has a dented and split chape, and heavily flaked leather body. Additionally, the rifle is fitted with a period leather sling, and has an original, chained magazine attached. This example of a rare Metford rifled, commercial Long Lee, is in fine-near excellent overall condition, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. FFL or C&R
