Description:
Serial #14712. This 1879-dated bayonet measures 25 3/8" overall, with a 20 1/2" straight, T-shaped blade. The steel has an overall pewter gray patina with some dark freckling near the tip, and a single area of dark freckling along the spine. The hooked quillon and muzzle-ring have a darker, mottled patina, while the brass pommel has a dull ochre color as well. The wooden grip panels are in fine shape with only minor handling marks in the original oil finish. The matching number scabbard has 95-97% of the original blue remaining, with modern inventory stickers about halfway down and near the throat (from the Bruce Stern collection). This is a fine example of a Gras bayonet overall.
