Payment Types Accepted: Checks, Money Orders or Credit Card with Service Fee Description: This Springfield M1 Garand rifle was manufactured in May 1945 and later sent to Griffin & Howe for conversion to MIC configuration with the addition of a Receiver Mounted Scope Base. The base is marked with the rifle serial number, 3688348. It is provided with an M82 scope with clear optics and a post reticle. The scope mounting bracket is numbered to an M1C, but not this one. It’s common to find removable scopes to be mixed on rifles. You will find that most M1C rifles are “Put-Together” from surplus or salvaged parts and misrepresented as real. This one is NOT, it is a Rare survivor. I have known this rifle for 30 years, when It was in the collection of noted sniper collector Harlin Reinfeld of Halifax PA. Some of Harlin’s other rifles have been included in “the German Sniper 1914-1945 by Peter B. Senich”. It has changed hands a few times since then. A verification letter from David H. McClain is included. “This letter verifies that M1 receiver serial number 3688348, is an authentic M1C receiver that was manufactured from the original World War II contract between Springfield Armory, Springfield Mass. and Griffin & Howe of New York City. While this verification is not always one hundred percent accurate, this specific receiver serial number is authenticated beyond any doubt.” Sight unseen, McClain was unable to verify the entire rifle as most have been overhauled or rebuilt at least one time. However, I have the rifle in hand and have performed a careful analysis. In summary I have found it to be a mostly correct original rifle. I believe the handguards have been replaced and all other parts and finish are correct for a May 1945 Garand. Following is a summary of the component parts: Receiver: 3688348 (March 1945) D 28291 35, Heat Lot: O 81 (see Photo) Barrel: Marked 1-SA-4-45 (April 1945) Excellent Bore, Throat Erosion 4.0, Muzzle Wear 2.5 Op Rod: Un-modified marked D35382, Flat Side (Correct) Op Rod Catch: Type 2 Late (Correct) Bullet Guide: Stamped No Notch (Correct) Clip Latch: Early Round Front, Leftover part from Inventory (Correct) Follower Assembly: Marked 13, (Correct) Follower Arm: Un-Beveled (Correct) Follower Rod: Long Fork Riveted (Correct) Operating Rod Spring: Round Wire (Correct) Bolt: Marked D 29287-19SA, Heat Lot B 14 (Correct) Rear Sight: Lock Bar, Square Ends (Correct) Rear Sight Cover: Ribs present (Correct) Aperture: Narrow w/ Double Track (Correct) Knobs: Knurled (Correct) Trigger Housing: Marked D 28290-18-SA (Correct) Trigger Guard: Stamped w/ Milled Hook (Correct) Trigger: No Hole, No Marks (Correct) Hammer: Marked C46008-7, Early Leftover part from Inventory (Correct) Hammer Spring Housing: Parkerized (Correct) Hammer Spring Plunger: Without Ears (Correct) Safety: Marked SA-11 (Correct) Gas Port Cylinder: Unmarked, Wide Sight Platform, Flat on Rear Ring. I don’t recommend it, because tampering with history is a sin, but a prettier SA / NFR stock could be mounted for display. Caliber .30-06, Serial Number 3688348. FFL Required. REVISION: After listing this Ad. I forwarded it to Dave McClain for review and comment. When Dave first survayed this rifle in 1987 it had a differnt date barrel installed. With that new information I must disclose that it is a Restoration to a Verified M1C receiver. Perhaps now it's not as rare as a Hens tooth but as rare as a Dinosour tooth.
