Description:
ON HOLD. This is a rare Civil War Plant Army Revolver and is a 1st Model with iron frame. The revolver is a .42 cupfire front loading model. It is estimated that only about 150 of these were made after an initial batch of about a 100 with brass frames. This is serial number 137 so it would be an early iron frame model. That serial number appears on multiple parts. The Plant name and address appears on top of the barrel flat. The Merwin & Bray trademark appears on the left side of the frame. The 1859 patent date is faint but is visible on the cylinder. The iron has a uniform gray patina with scattered black staining. There is some scratching on the cylinder with some small pocks as well and this should be visible in one of the pics. The grips are very good with a generous amount of varnish still on them. The bore is very clean with very good rifling. The action is crisp. The barrel to frame fit is extremely tight with no wobble. This revolver was produced in the war years and dropped cup fire cartridges have been dug at some Civil War sights. Again, it is one of the more rare Civil War cartridge revolvers. A collection focusing on Civil War cartridge revolvers is in most cases missing this revolver.
