  • Seven shot repeater
  • Loaded by magazine tube in center of butt stock
  • Operated by lowering and raising the combination trigger guard lever

  • Standard finish is case hardened receiver, butt plate, and barrel bands
  • Blued barrel is 6 groove and has good lands and grooves

  • One of the most colorful, widely used and popular Civil War firearms
  • The Spencer received the unique advantage and personal endorsement of President Lincoln
  • Towards the end of the Civil War, the Spencer established itself firmly as the main firearm for cavalry use and was widely issued during the Indian War era
  • It was a dazed, somewhat incredulous Confederate soldier, after capture by Custer's 5th Michigan Calvary at Gettysburg (only outfit armed with the Spencer that day) who is credited with the oft repeated remark that "(Spencer's) load in the morning and fire all day!"
  • The rimfire metallic cartridge used int eh Civil War issue Spencer rifle and carbine was known as the "No. 56" or "56-56" these later numbers referring to the measurements at the top and bottom of the copper case, indicating it was straight. In actuality, the bore measurement of the arms in which this case was used is the 52 caliber
  • Present day collector terms usually describe such arms as 50 caliber referring to bore diameters
  • From studies made of these arms, it is noted that Spencer always used six groove rifling while those made by Burnside or converted at the armory having three groove rifling, THIS MODEL HAS THE  6 GROOVE RIFLING and has not been altered
