Description:
This is a very nice all-original Dutch Hembrug Model 1895 Rifle Bayonet with it's original leather scabbard. These bayonets were introduced in 1895 to fit the Model 1895 Mannlicher or Geweer M.95 service rifle and remained in production thru World War 1.  This particular example is a standard rifle bayonet model and features a 14" inch T-backed blade with a double edge tip and an overall length of just over 18.75" inches.  The wooden grip panels are secured by steel rivets, and the bayonet is designed to fit closely between the barrel and protruding bayonet lug with a close muzzle ring and pommel machined for clearance.  The T-shape of the blade's spine gave the blade good strength, and the double edge point performed well against heavy clothing.  The original dark blue finish on this bayonet is in good condition overall, showing light wear in spots but no eyesores or bad spots.  The Hembrug maker marks and serial number are all crisp and clean.  The wooden grip panels are in excellent condition, showing only some minor handling marks and free from any cracks, chips, or repairs.  The spring-loaded lug catch is in perfect working order.  The original scabbard that comes with this bayonet is in great shape overall.  The leather is still soft and flexible, the original stitching is all intact and tight, and all of the original brass rivets are intact and tight.  The brass tip is still in place at the end of the scabbard, and the wire that holds it in place is in excellent condition.  The only deduction from the scabbard is that there is a slight bend at the tip that the leather has taken to that won't straighten out easily.  This prevents the bayonet from going all the way into the scabbard by a little less than 1/2 an inch.  This could probably be fixed with some careful effort.  We will leave that up to the next owner.  All in all, this is a very nice all-original M.95 Geweer bayonet and scabbard, and would be an excellent addition to any military arms or bayonet collection.
