Description:
This is a very lightly-used Smith & Wesson Model 49 Bodyguard revolver manufactured in 1971 and chambered in .38 Special.  The J-frame Model 49 Bodyguard is an all-carbon steel gun with a 1 & 7/8ths" inch barrel and a 5-shot cylinder.  The Bodyguard was offered in a blue or nickel plated finish and was first introduced in 1959.  The Model 49 was a huge success for Smith & Wesson, quickly proving itself a well-made, reliable, accurate, and easy-to-carry personal defense gun.  The shrouded hammer design made the gun snag-free when carried concealed in a pocket or purse, while at the same time giving the operator the ability to cock the gun manually and fire a well-aimed shot.  It remained in production for 37 years and is still sought-after today by both collectors and shooters alike.  This particular example is a factory blue finish gun that is in perfect mechanical shape and shows only some minor cosmetic defects.  The gloss blue finish on this Bodyguard rates 93%, with the deductions coming from speckling on the right side of the frame, some spots of prior surface rust on the backstrap of the grip frame, and a few scattered very minor handling/storage marks.  As you can see from the pictures, these imperfections do not detract much from the overall clean look of this revolver.  The factory case colors on the hammer and trigger are excellent, with both parts showing bright colors and no visible wear or fading.  The bore in this Bodyguard is perfect, showing strong and sharp rifling throughout the barrel with no pitting, erosion, or imperfections visible. The 5 chambers in the cylinder are equally as clean and free from imperfections.  The factory original grips are in great shape overall, free from any cracks, chips, or repairs and only showing some extremely minor handling marks.  Both grip panels are perfectly fit to the gun and tight to the frame with no wiggle.  Both grips have clean S&W medallions, and the checkering is crisp and clean.  The action on this Bodyguard is smooth, precise, and perfectly in-time.  All of the controls on this Smith are in perfect working order and the trigger is particularly good when used in single-action operation, breaking with a light pull without any grit or excessive travel.  This Model 49 Bodyguard should function just as well today as the day it left the factory 50 years ago.  If you have been looking to add a S&W Model 49 to your collection that is good enough to be considered an investment but not so good that you feel bad shooting it, this 1971-production gun would be an excellent choice.  This S&W is C&R eligible.
