This U.S. Model 1843 Hall-North breech-loading percussion saddle ring carbine is also known at the side-lever Hall. 10,500 were made by Simeon North, Middleton, CT, from 1844 to 1853. Of these 5,000 were later rifled for use in the Civil War. This 52 caliber smooth bore single shot carbine operates by depressing the thumb lever located on the right side of the receiver. This raises the breechblock so it can be loaded. The 21"" round barrel has a good bore. It is inspected JH on the left and has STEEL (lightly struck and partially visible) on the top flat. The metal has a smooth brown patina with a little roughness on the receiver top sides at the breech from firing. The breechblock, which is marked U.S/S. NORTH/MIDDTN/CONN./1845, has a smooth blue color with minimal firing roughness around the cone. The stock is very good with no cracks or chips and the expected issue dents and dings. It has two visible cartouches at the right and left rear flats. The sling bar and ring and ramrod are present. The action functions correctly. These unaltered smooth bore Hall U.S. Model 1843 carbines are surprisingly hard to find. This is a very nice specimen that would fit a Mexican or Civil War collection.
