Description:
"

This third model Brown Bess flintlock musket is the type used by British yeomanry/volunteer units. The yeomanry/volunteer units were formed and funded by the local lord/duke/earl/viscount/etc. to provide regional protection. The 39"" round 76 caliber barrel has a very good smooth bore. The barrel is bright with minimal staining. The barrel is fastened with three keys. It has two Birmingham proof marks at top center. The lock has the crown over GR at the center and J.G. Jones at the tail. J.G. Jones is probably one of the 15 John/Joseph Jones gunmakers listed for the Birmingham area, but which one??? The lock and cock are bright with a couple of small areas of staining. The brass furniture is good with the appropriate age/use wear. The flat brass sideplate is fastened by three screws. The stock is good with no chips or cracks with the exception of a 4"" crack running from the rear pipe toward the triggerguard. There is a blank oval brass escutcheon on the wrist. The buttplate tang has the rack number of 18 marked on it. The swivels and ramrod are present. The action functions correctly with the exception that half cock can be overridden by a trigger pull. This is a very nice example of a third model Brown Bess yeomanry/volunteer musket.
