VERMONT Antique LONG RIFLE by A. LEONARD of Saxons River, 1850s
Antique VERMONT Made HUNTING/TARGET Long Rifle!
Here we present an antique A. Leonard Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Saxons River, Vermont. A. Leonard was an active gunmaker in Saxons River between about 1840 through 1860. Leonard’s rifles were often fitted with a “Warren & Steele, Albany” lock, such as this one. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .47 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time.
The overall condition is good+. The action is strong. The bore is in very good shape for its age. This example is drilled and tapped for a tang sight which is not included. The crack on the right stock in front of the lock is stable. Most metal parts are engraved giving this rifle nice display-ability from all angles. “A. LEONARD/S.R. V.T.” is engraved atop the center of the barrel. “WARREN/&STEELE/ALBANY” can be read on the lock.
