Description:
This is a decent example of a Colt New Line Revolver in caliber .41 Rimfire. The Colt New Line was introduced in the mid-1870's. This particular one is in the 2600 serial range and was made in 1875. The New Line was offered in several different frame sizes to handle different calibers ranging from .22 to .41. Unfortunately for Colt, this well-made revolver simply couldn't compete with the explosion of cheaply made cartridge revolvers that flooded the market following the Civil War. The .41 New Line was discontinued in 1879 after only five years on the market.
This one is a Standard gun with 2-1/4" barrel, nickel finish, and rosewood grips. The .41 New Line must have been fairly popular in Great Britain as many were shipped back to the United States in the past quarter century following the passage of stricter laws in the UK. Most of the 41's we see have English Proofs and are in .41 Centerfire. This one is in .41 Rimfire and has no English proofs so this could have easily been used in the American West. It certainly shows some wear like it was carried in someone's pocket for a number of years. Condition-Wise, it's in NRA Antique Very Good Condition. There is 85% original nickel on the frame and gripstraps, 80% on the cylinder, and about 60% onthe barrel. The balance of the metal is a frosty gray patina. The left side of the barrel is worn like it could have been carried inside a small holster a holster. You can still see the original acid-etched panel on the left side of the barrel which says COLT NEW 41 in an oval about 1 1/4" long and 1/4" tall. It's worn but legible. See Photos...it actually shows up better in the overall than it does in the close-up. Original rosewood grips look to be made from a light English or Turkish walnut with dark lines in the growth rings like you see in fancy sporting rifles and shotguns. They're in Good Condition Overall with wear but solid, no chips, or cracks. Wood to metal fit is very good. Mechanics are nice. Bore is Fair to Good with decent rifling and no major pits. Markings are all good and legible. Decent screws. there is even some original fire blue on the rear profile of the hammer. Antique, No FFL required. No international sales, no sales to NYC, NJ, DC, Chicago, or HI. Sold as an antique collectible only. If you plan to fire an antique weapon, we strongly recommend you have it inspected by a competent gunsmith and research the type of ammunition which was used 145 years ago as it was not made for smokeless powder. 15.00 USPS Priority Mail with signature required.
