Description:
Here we have an extremely rare Winchester Model 1873 factory 16" short rifle in caliber 44 WCF aka 44-40 with Cody Museum verification sheet showing this rifle was charged to G. Amsinck and Company of New York, serial number applied April 27, 1910. It was received in the warehouse May 7, 1910 and shipped from the warehouse on July 28, 1910 to order number 266907.  G. Amsinck and Company was an importer that owned several plantations in South America, so chances are really good that this rifle went to South America for a while. Other than the 16" barrel, it is a standard rifle, having a full magazine, plain trigger, plain walnut stocks, standard open sights, shorter 8 3/8" forearm typically found on the 16 to 20 inch short rifles, and trap door butt plate (no cleaning rods present). As with these later 1873s, the caliber marking and barrel address are in the correct locations on the left barrel flat, and the barrel & receiver have the interlocked "WP" in the oval proof mark. Cody Museum verification sheet is pictured and will be included with the rifle for the buyer.

CONDITION:
Butt stock is still tight and even with tangs and receiver, showing typical dings and scratches from use, no splits, no cracks, no extra holes, and the letter "W" scratched into it in 2 places. Fore arm shows some chipping loss at receiver and nose cap. Receiver and mag tube show 25% original blue turned a milk chocolate patina. Barrel shows 80% of an old cold blue. Bore is an 8.5 of 10, shiny with sharp rifling but some typical light pitting. Action functions as it should at both half and full cock positions. Trap door in butt slides with out hanging up. Original dust cover is intact, still tight front to rear, with slight side to side play. Brass carrier block has never been cleaned and has turned a mellow dark mustard color. Mag tube plug retaining screw has been replaced. Overall grades NRA Modern Very Good and will fill a void in your Winchester rifle collection!
