Description:
A.H. Fox Model SPE Special Order 16 ga in excellent 95%+ condition. This is a very rare Fox Gun – few were made. (about 48 SP models in 16ga of all variations) It is so rare that it is not listed in the “Blue Book of Gun Values”. However, they were made from 1932 - 1946 and are described in McIntosh’s book which provides original sales price. Farther, this gun was a “Special” made to order and remains in original factory “order tag” description in every detail. The “order tag” (see photo #14) provides said details as follows: Model SPE, SN303790; 28” bbls bored full & mod; 2 ¾” chambers; double triggers; straight stock with 14“ LOP, 1 ½” DC & 2 1/8 ” DH; Hawkins recoil pad; twin ivory beads; non-auto safety; Gold escutcheon w initials KC; and special stock wrist and comb dimensions. Such guns are hard to value.
In October 2020 a 16 ga. SP with 26“ bbls sold on for $6750 (GB #878656116). Though a rare model it was a stock gun with short barrels, pistol grip stock, no ejectors; no ivory beads; no gold escutcheon. In 1936 the SPE list price was the same as the AE grade. The Blue Book of Gun Values provides the following comparison of the difference in estimated value of the 2 guns: (Yea, I know, books don't sell guns.) Reduced from $7000.
