PAIR OF DOCUMENTED WILKINSON & SON GENTLEMAN'S PERCUSSION BELT PISTOLS, CIRCA 1833. Serial numbers match to both guns and correspond with Wilkinson Records in the UK that document them being manufactured to order in 1833 by Alexander Gordon. Copy of ledger page included. Ledger says"Pistols, Pocket, Side(belt hooks), 38 Bore and with 4 1/2 inch barrels"- "Purchased by Alex Gordon". Alexander Gordon(1781-1873) was most probably The British Cavalry Officer (15 Hussars) who served in the Napoleonic Wars. He was the son of the 3rd Earl of Aberdeen and went on to live a long and fruitful(9 kids) life with many of his family serving in the military. Both barrels are smoothbore (excellent bore condition). Very fine scroll engraving(including at breeches on barrels and muzzles). Swivels ramrods(one is missing the rod and stirrups). Barrels rebrowned at one time with no loss of engaving and match rest of guns. Crisp fine checkering on bag shaped original grips and solidly attached(often loose). Engraved screw nut missing on gun without ramrod so does not need screw, just threaded nut. Both guns have nipple trap with one period steel ball in butt end. Intricate original hammers with sea serpant spurs. Original belt hooks solid. Both guns with Crown over "GP" and Crown over "V" London proofs. Wilkinson assumed Henry Nocks dynasty(Henry Nock was Henry Wilkinson's grandfather and so name after him) so the quailty and craftmanship follow suit. Although Wilkinson & Son are largely known for their swords later on it was here in firearms that they got their start. Interesting to note that on the same page as these pistols the ledger states many other fine custom order guns in a wide array including a ships swivel gun, a few tube lock pistols, etc. Difficult to find these Wilkinson & Son pairs these days and would make a nice addition to any Wilkinson Sword collectors display. Very reasonably priced for a pair of Wilkinson pistols with documentation
