Description:
EXCELLENT CONDITION AND RARE SHARPS 1853 SLANT BREECH SHOTGUN, #11XXX, ONLY 320 MADE. These breech loading percussion shotguns are certainly a scarce Sharps sporting model. This example has a silver plated brass patchbox and butt plate of which all the silver remains with only a little brass showing through on the top and bottom edges of the butt plate. Typically only higher grade Sharps shotguns had plated butt plates or patchboxes. The patchbox has a matching serial number as does the 28" round barrel that is the standard 26 bore (.577 caliber). These were made to be fired with paper cartridges holding shot. The barrel is identical to all round Sharps shotgun barrels with a single bead front sight and has no other markings besides the serial number under the forearm. The lock/receiver have the standard Sharps markings and the walnut stock and forearm with correct rounded pewter tip match perfectly. The wood is excellent with only a hairline age crack in the bottom of the forend at the receiver that goes nowhere. The receiver is mainly gray with good case color around the hammer and in the protected areas. The barrel shows a fine  uncleaned plum with fine fairly bright bore. Tight wood to metal fit with most of the original varnish finish remaining. A handsome and rare Sharps from the 1850s.
