This is a good solid example of one of the the last U.S. carbines to have a saddle ring- by 1899 they were gone. This example is correctly marked "MODEL 1896 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" on the left side of the receiver with the serial number. It retains the saddle ring and bar along with the correct sight protector barrel band. The rear sight is the 1896 rifle sight with ladder and slide intact. The barrel shows good thinning blue and has the front sight protector hood. The stock is solid with one small crack coming back from the forend tip for an inch or so. The stock is marked with double circle P inspector cartouches with the letter "U" behind the trigger guard and no visible cartouche on the side of the stock indicating that this was probably a field replaced stock during its time of use. Fine handguard matches the stock. Fine action with the receiver an uncleaned freckled gray/brown patina. bore is excellent, sharp and bright. All Krags are getting hard to find especially carbines and those with antique serial numbers.
