Description:
Rare ROCHESTER NEW YORK Antique J.&J. MILLER MULE EAR Percussion LONG RIFLE

c1840s NY Long Rifle, Octagonal Barrel, Patch Box .40 Caliber

Here we present an antique J. & J. Miller Half Stock Percussion Mule Ear Long Rifle in .40 Caliber, made circa the 1840s in Rochester, New York. The Mule Ear lock was invented in the United States somewhere around the mid-1830s. The history of this design is obscure as to who, where, and when the first one was made. It is believed that likely due to its appearance, much like an underhammer, it lacked general acceptance. These were not equipped with a half cock position. J. & J. Miller were best known as makers of mid-19th century pill lock revolving rifles, very intricate and rare items, indeed.

This example is slender and graceful, and even relatively light, which would have made it very handy for the woods or the Frontier. It is engraved throughout the brass hardware, including a scroll and snake motif on the patch box. It is adorned with silver hunter stars on the dual cheek rests and has “RGM” inscribed on the silver thumb rest. Its octagonal barrel is in approximately .40 caliber (from land to land), large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. The top of the barrel is marked “J.&J. MILLER/ROCHESTER. The front sight is a fine blade set it a dovetail while the rear sight is has a notch in back and a flip up leaf in front of that. The leaf is pierced through the middle for an aperture type of sight picture, and there is a notch at the top of the leaf for an elevated, longer range sight. The patch box is latched closed and there is a small spring-loaded button on the bottom of the stock near the toe that releases the latch.

The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore is in good condition with sharp rifling. The stock remains solid, though small repairs and thin splits are visible throughout. This is a very unique and rare long rifle from Rochester, New York!
