Early Type of Revolver! Engraved
Here we present an antique Percussion Pepperbox Pistol, made circa the 1850s. This one happens to be unmarked but for the number “68” on the barrel cluster, but both Ethan Allen or the Manhattan Company are possible makers. This type of revolver was truly one of the first repeaters when most were still using a single shot pistol. Each chamber has its own section of barrel and they revolve together when the double action only trigger is pulled. Named because of its resemblance to a household pepper grinder, the first pepperbox pistols were produced around 1790, and unlike this one, were fired by rotating the barrel by hand. These little revolvers were in their heyday from about 1830 until roughly around the time of the American Civil War. The history that these pistols enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. These guns are true relics of American history.
The overall condition is fine. Lovely blue finish. The action is strong all the way around. The bores are in good shape. Both grips are in nice condition and remain firmly seated. The frame is lightly engraved with traditional floral designs. This is a very attractive, 5-shot pepperbox revolver from the first half of the 19th Century!
