The metal is very fine and smooth with virtually no pitting of any consequence and retains a dark plum-brownish patina overall with fine markings, although the frame patent dates are overstamped but still partially legible. Excellent standard one-piece walnut grips with no deficits, chips, scratches, or wear and while the grips fit excellent, they are just too good so that in my opinion, they are probably (no, are certain to be) replaced grips. This Single Action was originally destined to be sold to the military because it has David F. Clarks (DFC) stamp on the frame. Such Colt S/As are generally “over-runs”, as the government had simply ordered too many. It seems that almost all of the over-runs fall in the years of the DFC inspected range. They were never fully inspected and were simply sold to civilian dealers. However, this is the classic configuration of the mid-1880s cowboy revolver, and except for the grips almost surely having been being replaced and probably some modest upgrading, such as being “cold blued” at some point, it is otherwise a handsome gun with a very decent bore and fine metal. Overall, it is a very desireable Cattle War era Colt with a very handsome Old West appearance, and is far above the average for a Single Action that is usually found priced in this same condition, age, and price range.VG+ $3350 SOLD Antique: Yes |
