Description:
Winchester 1885 High Wall Winder Musket

I will describe exactly what I know about this rifle and the opinions that have been given to me by many gun show " experts ".

I purchased this gun about 3 years ago with the thought of making it into a 22 hornet. After doing some research and talking to some Winchester guys at the gun shows and online I decided to leave it as is. This rifle is pretty rare being a high wall winder most were low wall with integral peeps not the Krag sight.  I did not realize when I purchased this rifle what it was. These 1885s were used as training rifles by the US military from 1918-1922. The rear sight of the rifle is the exact same as the Krag rifle and I assume was much cheaper to train with than the 30-40. After doing considerable research on these Winder muskets I founded this one is in pretty damn good shape. These rifles were used and abused by the military and not many survived in anything but wall hanger condition.

On to the particulars of the rifle. The rifle was made in 1919 according to the serial number. During research of the rifle I found multiple s and books which gave different dates but 1919 was show on at least 3. The barrel is marked 22 Long R. To the best of my knowledge the rifle is factory correct other than the metal butt plate. The butt plate appears to be thicker than the ones I have seen on other rifles. The barrel is frosted but shows adequate rifling from front to back. I did the best I could to take a picture of the rifling but I struggled to get a good shot. The blueing of the rifle has turned brown over most of the rifle and blueing is missing on heavily used areas like the lever. I fired 20 factory 22 long rifle shells from this rifle offhand at 25 yards and it kept a pretty darn good group. In all honesty the firing pin leaves a pretty light mark on the brass and I needed to recock the hammer on five of the 20 shells. I pictured one of the 22s with the light strike mark on the back. I'm sure for someone with knowledge of these firearms could fix this pretty easily. There seems to be a repair to a crack in the wood by the metal butt plate. It looks like about a 2" piece of wood cracked off and was epoxyed back on. The breach of this rifle works perfectly and remains locked up tight when closed. The extractor fires the shell nearly 12" from the breach. I am certainly not an expert on these rifles so if I misrepresented anything please let me know and I will update as necessary.

I have only completed 3 sales prior on Guns international but all went perfectly and the buyers were all satisfied. Shipping is an additional $50 to the continental US. I am happy to answer any questions you may have my cell is 716 574 4677 and my name is Josh.
