Description:
This is a New York Depot, post Civil War, canteen with a reddish-brown “dyed canvas" canteen cover likely updated from the original wool covering in a small Western depot or military post. Note the crude stitching and 3/4" type on the canvas indicative of this change and dating this to sometime in the 1870's. The chain and stopper may be a later replacement. For reference see Mike O'Donnell's U.S. Army & Militia Canteens, 1775-1910, p.249.
