Carbine, manufactured circa 1940 at the Terni Arsenal during a production run between 1938 and 1945. Carcano is the frequently used name for a series of Italian bolt-action, magazine-fed, repeating military rifles and carbines. Introduced in 1891, this rifle was chambered for the rimless 6.5×52mm Carcano round. It was developed by the chief technician Salvatore Carcano at the Turin Army Arsenal in 1890 and was originally called the Modello 91 or simply M91. Successively replacing the previous Vetterli-Vitali rifles and carbines, it was produced from 1892 to 1945. The M91 was used in both rifle (fucile) and shorter-barreled carbine (moschetto) form by most Italian troops during World War I and by Italian and some German forces during World War II. Interestingly, the Carcano Model 1938 was the rifle owned by Lee Harvey Oswald and determined to be the John F. Kennedy assassination rifle. This one is almost identical in configuration, including the optic and mount. The scope is an Ordnance Optics Inc. Hollywood, California 4x18 made in Japan with fine crosshairs that are off-center. It is side-mounted in a stamped sheet-metal mount marked “NO 2 JAPAN”. The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore is bright throughout. “1940” is dated on the barrel. If you are looking for a similar rifle to the one allegedly used by the infamous Lee Harvey Oswald, this one is for you. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 21 inches.
