Description:
Serial #28, .72 Caliber, 34 1/8" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some dark pitting within the grooves. This is a very rare military style rifle, number 28 of 35 built, ordered from James Purdey in the 1830s by the Earl of Tankerville in order to arm his privately funded and equipped corps of yeomanry. The rifle has beautiful striping along the barrel, which has a folding three-leaf rear sight, and octagonal breech with original color case-hardening still present at the elaborate, matching numbered bolster and tang. The bolster is equipped with a shielded, platinum blowout, and the lock and hammer also retain a commensurate amount of the original color case-hardening with some streaks of brighter gray along the edges and on the hammer. The brass trigger guard, plain buttplate, nosecap, and dramatically oversized ramrod thimbles all have a mellow yellow-ochre patina with some past cleaning or polishing evident. The walnut stock is fastened by three wedges and has scattered handling marks and blemishes in the old varnish finish. The buttstock has a sporting style rounded cheek-piece, and there are a few minor scratches and marks around the lock screw bolster on the left side. The ramrod is original and distinctively oversized with a large, easily grasped horn knob at the tip. These rifles were ordered by Charles Bennett, Lord Ossulston, and 6th Earl of Tankerville sometime around his succession in 1832, a time of great political turmoil in England, and were intended to arm the guards at his estate at Chillingham Castle in Northumberland. They are truly rare and unusual Purdey guns, and this example is in excellent condition. Antique
