Description:
***   SOLD   ***   Handsome, high quality bar action hammer gun with 1863 Purdey(Second Pattern) push-forward thumbhole underlever made circa 1873 - 1879. F.H. Holmes was a provincial maker of quality guns located at 47 Greengate Street in Stafford and this gun has all the signature features of a high quality game gun. Nice acanthus and border scroll engraving with carved percussion fences, highly figured nitro Damascus barrels. Non-rebounding hammers. Tight on face. Generous barrel wall thickness. Some residual case coloring. Weighs 6lb 12oz.   ***   The 30” highly figured nitro reproved barrels have extractors and 2-1/2” chambers. Typical of guns of this era there is some very light pitting visible in the otherwise shiny bores. The barrels are topped by a raised concave game style rib. The rib is inscribed “F.H. Holmes Stafford”.  The right barrel is bored 0.733 and has a constriction of 0.00 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.031. The left barrel is bored 0.734 with a constriction of 0.001 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.030. Cylinder choke is one of the most misunderstood chokings. It delivers the most consistent patterns and with modern ammunition utilizing shot cup wads it patterns tighter. I personally own several vintage guns with cylinder choking and never feel under choked at the range. Ideal choking for quail, grouse, and woodcock.   ***   The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured French walnut. The stock has a checkered butt with engraved heel and toe plates. Stock dimensions are 14-1/2” to a checkered butt by 1-7/16” by 2-1/8”. Cast off for the righthanded shooter. The stock shows handling marks from normal usage with some wear on the checkering. The forearm has an inlaid horn tip and a wedge fastener. It shows noticeable wear on the checkering and there is also a small piece of wood missing from the right side of the forearm near the knuckle of the action. The checkering wear and missing piece of wood are easily and inexpensively repairable.   ***   This is a very high quality hammergun for not a lot of money. It just needs a little tender loving care to make it sparkle. Handles very well.  ***   This is an Antique Firearm and does not require an FFL. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which starts the day of delivery to your FFL or you and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense.
