Clark! Here we present an antique Remington-Lee Bolt Action Rifle in .45-70 Gov’t, manufactured in Ilion, New York and chambered in .45-70 GOVT. Designed by James Paris Lee, rifles of this type were originally manufactured by the Sharps Rifle Company and first appeared in 1879. Remington Company began production of their models in 1881, after Sharps Company ceased operations. Approximately 100,000 Lee magazine rifles were manufactured between 1880 and 1907. When Remington took over production, it produced copies in .45-70 GOVT. Arguably the most modern rifle in the world until the introduction of the 8 mm smokeless powder using Lebel M1886 rifle, the Lee utilized the first successful detachable box magazine, unlike the Lebel which still used a tube magazine. This one was inspected by David F. Clark. Clark was an ordnance inspector for the U.S. Government between 1880 and 1887. However, in its current configuration, it is clear that this was adapted during the period of use—it is a really handy, large-bore rifle! The barrel and fore stock were shortened, and a new front sight installed. There is an aged gray patina at the muzzle. The barrel band does have a flat spring and a thin shim to help hold it on—this was installed after the stock was shortened and the Schnabel element added. “US” marked butt plate tang, “DFC” inspection markings throughout. “VP” and “US” markings on the blued barrel. Original blue finish. Clean bore with nice rifling. The action is excellent. The stock is smooth and solid. There is a thin part on the left side next to the receiver that has a small hole. This is a very quick handling bolt action rifle in .45-70! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 22-1/2 inches.
