The 22"" round 54 caliber barrel has a good bore with dark strong rifling and some frosting in the grooves. The barrel is a frown patina with areas of light roughness. This very early fifth model, serial number 203, was probably delivered in 1863. The breechblock has the standard fifth model marking: MODEL OF 1864. The breechblock and action are bright with areas of brown stain. The buttstock, with two visible cartouches and the initials J.W. and what appears to be a backwards S carved into the left side, is good with issue dings and dents. The forend is also good with issue dents and dings. The sling bar and ring are present. The action functions correctly. This is a good example of the fifth model Burnside carbine that was used extensively by the Union during the Civil War. SOLD Antique: Yes |
