Description:
Serial #16005, .22 WCF, 10 1/4 inch part octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very interesting handgun, obviously based on the Stevens Large Frame Tip-Up design, but built by Thomas Bland in London to tighter tolerances, and with a much higher degree of craftsmanship. The barrel is maker marked: “THOMAS BLAND & SON 2 KING WILLIAM ST. LONDON", with “THE ROYAL NAVY PISTOL" along the top flat at the breech. Additionally, there are original Birmingham proofs along the underside of the barrel, with later Birmingham proofs and a hand-stamped “.22 W" caliber marking at the breech. The barrel retains about 60-70% of the original blue which blends smoothly into a mellow plum-brown along the balance. The frame has about 40-50% of the original color case-hardening remaining, mostly on and around the standing breech, as well as on the substantial flared steel butt, and has a mottled plum-brown patina on the balance. The front sight is a target bead mated to a typical British V-notch rear sight with platinum line inlay. The checkered walnut grips are in very good-fine shape with numerous small handling marks and some moderate flattening of the points. The grips screw appears to be original, but was broken at some point, and is now about 1/8" too short. The lock-up is tight and the action functions flawlessly. This pistol was purchased out of Esquimalt Naval Base, British Columbia, and was purportedly used for handgun marksmanship training, although there are no Canadian property markings anywhere on the gun. Regardless, this is a rare, British copy of a Stevens pistol, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. FFL or C&R
