Antique Connecticut Arms Manf'g Co. Hammond Patent “Bulldog” Single-Shot Breechloading Derringer, .44 RF cal., blued 4” octagonal barrel with German silver blade front sight, is marked “Connecticut Arms & Manf'g. Co. Naubuc, Conn.” on top flat; unique left-pivoting breechblock with top release button and floating firing pin opens for cartridge loading/extraction, is marked on top "Patented Oct. 25, 1864"; rounded iron frame has integral grip straps; 2-pc. brown hard rubber grips have checkered side panels. Unique and quite scarce, as only about 8,000 were made circa 1866-late 1880s.
Condition is very good. The barrel has a predominantly brown patina; case hardening has silvered out. Markings on the barrel and breech block are clear; rear portion of the barrel with small impressions. Grips with light handling marks, nice color, and fit well; right grip with a tiny piece missing from the bottom edge; otherwise no chips, cracks, or substantial blemishes. Lower left edge of the breech block with some small missing pieces where the metal gets thin (see photos). Action is strong and smooth; bore with intermittent spots of moderate pitting, sharp rifling.
