Description:
Antique Ornate European Flintlock Horse Pistol, possibly of Dutch origin, approx. .68 cal., 18.25” overall, pinned 10.5” round-to-octagonal barrel with blade front and tang-groove rear sights, is unmarked; long, curved, bevel-edge lockplate with faceted pan and projecting rear teat is likewise unmarked; trigger with curved tail; brass furniture includes trigger guard with fancy, high-relief front finial and long fancy rear finial (appears to have been originally gold-plated), very large oval butt having chased relief designs including a gargoyles head cap and side tangs, ornately pierced floral design sideplate, an ornately pierced wrist inlay surmounted by a (perhaps royal) stylized lion mask, and 2 fancy fluted ferrules retaining the hardwood tulip-head ramrod; the dark European hardwood fullstock is ornately carved, having beautifully shaped raised panels on both sides of the lock and surrounding the swallowtail barrel tang, ramrod channel and trigger guard.

Condition is good.  The barrel appears to have been cleaned of erosion and now shows a lightly etched gunmetal color, the lock parts show moderate pitting and are dark gunmetal gray, the brass surfaces show scattered mostly minor dings and a light age patina which is uneven at the trigger guard.  The carved stock with  a ¼” shallow gouge at right forend as well as a hairline crack, general impressions and marks from age and use, with a slight hairline crack at the upper tang.  Frizzen screw appears to be a replacement; rear tail on the sideplate with a small repair.  Action is tight and functions as designed; smoothbore shows overall moderate to heavy erosion.  Showing signs of age and wear this was once a beautiful and ornate pistol of high quality.
