Description:
***   SOLD   ***   James MacNaughton was the inventor of the first Scottish round action and this is a nice example of one of his hammerguns. The maker tells me it was manufactured circa 1891 and it has highly figured nitro Damascus barrels reproofed in England to 2-3/4” chambers. Twenty percent coverage with period engraving. Nice patina on action and about 60% barrel brown. Gun is on face and in great mechanical condition. Percussion fences with low rebounding hammers that sit below the shooter’s line of sight when cocked. This rare Scottish beauty weighs 6lb 8oz making it a great gun to carry and as light as most current manufacture 20 gauges!    ***   The 28” nitro proofed Damascus barrels have extractors and are nicely figured. The raised solid concave game style rib is inscribed “J. MacNaughton”. The shiny bores were recently reproved in Birmingham and show the proper proof marks. The right barrel is bored 0.733 and has a constriction of 0.006 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.029. The left barrels is bored 0.732 with a constriction of 0.033 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.029. Great choking for upland gunning and a common choking for the era.    ***   The nicely figured original wood shows no oil soak and is in sturdy condition. Checkering is at 95% and the finish at 90% with a few minor handling marks. The forearm has a horn tip and a Deeley & Edge release. Stock dimensions are 14-3/8” over a 3/4” pad by 1-3/8” by 2-1/8”. Cast off for the right hand shooter.   ***   This is a great gun for game or clays. A sturdy hammergun from one of Scotland’s greatest makers!  ***   Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense if the gun is not as described in the listing.   ***   Come and see this great double and other fine firearms at the MacNab and Heritage Guns booths at the Southern Side by Side Championship & Exhibition April 22nd – 25th, 2021 at Deep River Sporting Clays in Sanford, NC. ^^^^^ Enter the MacNab / John Dickson & Son Scottish Round Action event at the shoot. Participants must shoot a Scottish-made Round Action in this competition.
