This early production example, 1907, is in excellent condition in an original period owner’s / dealer’s casing. The first model Colt ‘Officers Model’ was developed from the Colt .38 caliber Models 1892, 1894, 1895, and ‘New Army & Navy’ revolvers. In 1904 Colt decided to offer a deluxe target model of their .38 caliber swing out cylinder solid frame revolvers which had been adopted by the US Army, US navy, numerous police departments, and proving popular in the general commercial market. The first model ‘Officers Model’ revolvers - 1904 to about 1908 - featured 6’ barrels, and could be had in .38 Special or .38 Colt US caliber, they had counter clockwise revolving cylinders, side plates on the right side of the frame, narrow trigger guards, and early style numbered loading gate. These revolvers have ‘Partridge’ type target sights , the rear adjustable for windage, the front for elevation. Officers models were serial numbered within general production and appear in the 225,000 to around 280,000 range. First model Colt ‘Officers Model’ revolvers must have had limited production since they are quite scarce with excellent condition examples rarely encountered. In 1908 Colt considerably re-designed their double action swing out cylinder revolvers and from that time through the 1960s the Colt ‘Officers Model’ was the choice of most US amateur and professional handgun competition target shooters. Colt built the ‘Officers Model’ to be the finest competition target revolver available. ‘Officers Model’ revolvers were to be Colt’s top-of-the-line and were individualy built to the highest standards. Their actions were hand fitted and all internal parts were highly polished to make cylinder indexing, lock up, and trigger pull in double as well as single action as smooth as possible - considerably better than standard models. The exterior finish was the best high polish Colt charcoal bluing, and the grips were fine checkered walnut. This first model Colt ‘Officers Model’ revolver is in excellent original condition. The frame, crane, loading gate, and grips have matching assembly number #304.The revolver is chambered for the .38 Special cartridge with a 6” barrel and retains 97%+ original Colt high polish blued finish with a very few age spots. The finely checkered backstrap and trigger are excellent. The trigger, hammer, and all screws retain all their ‘fire-blue’ finish. The bore and all mechanical functions are excellent. The checkered walnut grips retain all their original varnish finish with some very light handling marks. The origin al period owner / dealer casing is black leatherette (of the type popular ca. 1900) covered wood with fitted compartments lined in blue beize. The case has a removable walnut cartridge block, a jointed brass cleaning rod, and two brass handle steel screw drivers (one for general take down and a smaller one for sight adjustment). The case is in excellent original condition with some very light wear on the exterior. This Colt is an exceptional example of the very scarce first Colt ‘Officers Model’ revolvers suitable for inclusion in a high condition colt collection.
