Description:
SOLD. Standard US Army Issue Colt Model 1894 Double Action Revolver in .36 Colt.  6" Barrel with blued finish and walnut grips.  Serial Number is in the 60,000 range and was made in early 1895 as part of the Army's first contract of 3,000 for the new Model 1894.  The 1894 was essentially identical to the Model 1892 DA with an added safety feature which blocked the hammer when they cylinder was not locked into the frame.  The improvement was designed by Mr. Frank B. Felton of Colt's Engineering team and all subsequent revolvers ordered by the US Army were designated as "Model 1894's". Furthermore, he Army implemented an aggressive programe to upgrade all of their 8,000 Model 1892's with Felton's device which would receive a Patent on March 5, 1895.  All but about 300 US Army Model 1892's received the upgrade.  So this is one of the first Model 1894's made and its in prime serial range for Colt Double Actions that saw action in Cuba during the Spanish American War and later in the Philippines.  Unfortunately, as much as the Army loved the Colt Double Action Design with its swing out cylinder, the .38 Colt cartridge it fired performed poorly against the fierce Moro Tribesmen in the Philippines eventually leading to the development of the Colt 1911 in .45 ACP.   These early Model 1894's are difficult to find in original condition as like their predecessor, the Model 1892,  many were upgraded to the Model 1901 with the addition of a lanyard loop swivel added to the bottom of the grip strap after the turn of the century.  This one never received the upgrade.  What's interesting about this first group of Model 1894's is that their  barrels just have the early 1884 and 1888 Patent dates. Even though it has Fulton's improvement, the patent was only granted by the US Gov't just before the last of this initial contract was being completed  so it lacks "1895" Patent even though it has the improvement. Thus, the 1894 DA's in the 60,000-62,0999 range were the last revolvers made for the US Army with just the 84 and 88 patents.  The other interesting aspect of these earlier Model 1894's is that Colt was still putting the last digits of the assembly numbers on the barrel and cylinders.   On this revolver, the assembly numbers are the last for digits of the serial number.  This one has matching numbers on the frame, barrel, cylinder, latch, and yoke.  "RAC" inspector markings are located on the left side of the frame, underneath the barrel, and on the rear face of the cylinder.  The grips have the early large cartouches which are a bit worn but still visible on both panels for inspectors Taylor and Carr.  Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Excellent with 95% bright original blue remaining.  Hammer profiles still retain most of their factory bright polish with the top still showing much of its original fire blue.  Most of the screws and trigger show fire blue as well.  Mechanics work in both double and single action modes.  Bore is bright with strong lands and grooves...Fine Plus Overall.  Grips show handling wear and but are solid with no chips, cracks, or repairs.  A nice unaltered exampled of a Colt Model 1894 just as it would have been issued to regular Army personnel during the Span-Am Conflict.  Antique, Pre-1898 under the Federal GCA of 1968.  No FFL required in most states except NJ, HI and NY.  No sales to NYC, DC, Chicago, or any municipality that considers this to be a modern firearm.  Sorry, no International Sales.  $25.00 shipping via USPS Priority Mail in Lower 48.
